Planted Aquarium Lighting: Why Brighter Isn’t Always Better

Lighting has always been one of the most important elements in a planted aquarium. It drives plant growth by powering photosynthesis, and also enhances the natural colors of both plants and fish, making the tank look vibrant and full of life.

Over the past 15 years, LED technology has evolved dramatically. Back in 2005, options were extremely limited. The first attempts with white LEDs were far from ideal. They couldn’t compete with T5, HQI, or even T8 fluorescent lighting in terms
of performance or plant health.

But technology kept advancing. Specialized brands, like ADA, began releasing LEDs designed specifically for planted tanks, such as the ADA Aquasky. These were among the first LED fixtures where plants could grow well. However, they still couldn’t match the color richness and balanced performance of high-quality T5 systems.

This all changed in Europe with the introduction of RGBW (Red, Green, Blue, White) LEDs, led by Twinstar EU. These lights combined accurate color blending with a spectrum tailored for plant growth. For the first time, LED systems offered better
performance, more vibrant coloration, and greater energy efficiency than any previous lighting technology.

Modern Lighting: Powerful but Not Always Better

Today’s aquarium lights are packed with many features, from spectrum control and built-in timers to high output power. But this leads us back to an important question:

So Isn’t Brighter Always Better?

The short answer: plants have a limit to how much light they can absorb. Going beyond that won’t make them grow faster. In fact, it can harm them and make tank maintenance more difficult. Let’s explore why.

In this aquascape, I chose the Twinstar Light 600S, a powerful and beautifully designed fixture. One of the strengths of Twinstar is that each model is tailored for specific aquarium sizes and styles. But even so, depending on your tank’s layout and plant placement, the light may still be too intense.

For example, the 600S can produce over 300 μmol/m²/s PAR near the surface, while most aquatic plants thrive within a 50-80 μmol/m²/s PAR range. That’s a huge difference!

In this specific layout, with many stones and raised substrate, the plants are already quite close to the surface, so managing light intensity becomes essential to avoid stress, algae, or even stunted plant growth.

How I Solved This: Using Twinstar LightControl

To fine-tune the setup, I added the Twinstar LightControl, the brand’s first Bluetooth-enabled controller. While many Bluetooth systems on the market are cluttered with unnecessary features (like lighting effects or uncalibrated spectrums), Twinstar kept it clean, beautiful and functional.

Twinstar’s mobile app offers a simple interface with:

  • On/Off switch
  • Brightness control
  • Timer settings

The light spectrum is pre-calibrated by Twinstar experts, so there’s no need to tweak anything manually, a huge plus for consistent plant growth.

Smart Features That Actually Help

One feature I really appreciate is the sunrise and sunset transition, which I set to 30 minutes for a gentle, stress-free lighting change that keeps fish calm.

I also reduced the brightness to around 75%, which still delivers over 200 μmol/m²/s PAR at the surface, more than enough for healthy plant growth without overdoing it.

Another standout feature is the Light Planner, which lets you set the power output for the first 25 days. This helps avoid algae blooms and makes tank maintenance much easier during the startup phase.

Final Thoughts

With just a few thoughtful adjustments, you can unlock the full potential of your lighting system without overwhelming your plants or your maintenance routine. The key is balance, not brute force! So remember: in planted aquariums, more light isn’t always better. The right light, used correctly, truly makes the difference.
