Matrix™ – High Porosity Biomedia for Advanced Biofiltration
Description
Matrix™ is a premium-grade, high-porosity biomedia designed to provide exceptional biofiltration by efficiently removing nitrogenous waste—ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate—from aquatic systems. Composed of an inert, porous inorganic solid, each 10 mm granule is engineered to maximise biological surface area.
With over 700 m² of surface area per litre, Matrix™ outperforms traditional plastic biomedia, which offer only external surface space. Matrix™ features both external and internal macropores, ideally sized to support colonies of both nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. This unique structure enables simultaneous aerobic and anaerobic filtration within the same filter, a feature not found in most other biomedia.
Key Features
- Extremely high surface area (>700 m²/L)
- Supports both nitrifying (aerobic) and denitrifying (anaerobic) bacteria
- Removes ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate simultaneously
- Completely inert – will not break down or dissolve
- Can be rinsed as needed without harming beneficial bacteria
- Compatible with all wet and wet-dry filtration systems
Usage Guidelines
- Use 250 mL of Matrix™ for every 200 L (50 US gallons) of aquarium water
- Place directly into any filter chamber—no filter bag required for most setups
- Especially effective in canister filters and sump systems
- For drip tray applications, consider using Pond Matrix™, a larger-grade variant
- For rapid biofilter establishment, use in conjunction with Stability®
Matrix™ offers a long-lasting, low-maintenance solution for maintaining pristine water quality in both freshwater and marine aquariums.
