What do I need for a fish tank?
For a small tank you’ll need a tank, filter and heater. You’ll also need substrate, decorations, water conditioner, fish food and a net. Plus a test kit, thermometer and cleaning siphon. Pro Tip: Larger tanks are easier to maintain as the water balance is better. But beginners can start with smaller tanks for easier management.
How do I choose the right filter for my fish tank?
When choosing a filter consider your tank size, fish type and filtration needs. Filtration is needed to remove debris, break down waste and eliminate toxins. For most tanks a hang-on-back (HOB) filter is easy to use, canister filters are for larger or heavily stocked tanks, sponge filters are for small tanks and breeding setups and internal filters are for moderately stocked tanks. Saltwater tanks may need additional filtration like protein skimmers. Make sure to choose a filter that’s rated for at least your tank volume and oversizing the filter will improve water quality and reduce maintenance.
How do I choose lighting for my fish tank?
For fish only tanks basic LED or fluorescent lighting is enough. For planted tanks full spectrum lighting (6,500K–7,000K) is needed to promote plant growth, for reef tanks high intensity lighting (10,000K+) with blue actinic light for coral health. Adjustable LED fixtures offer energy efficiency and control over the light intensity. Keep a consistent light cycle (8–10 hours daily) and avoid over-bright lighting to prevent algae growth.
How do I choose a substrate?
Choosing the right substrate depends on the type of tank you have. Gravel (2–5mm) is good for most freshwater fish, sand for bottom dwellers like corydoras or marine tanks. Nutrient rich soil for planted tanks and crushed coral or aragonite for saltwater tanks. 1–3 inches of substrate for aesthetic and functionality.
Which tank should I choose?
When choosing a tank, consider the type of fish you want to keep and the space in your home. For beginners a 45 to 90 liter tank is a good size that’s flexible. Larger tanks (136L or more) are for more fish and can be due to better water balance. Do you want a freshwater or saltwater tank, saltwater tanks are more maintenance and equipment intensive.
